How to export a Gemini conversation to Markdown
18 October 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer
Gemini's Share and export menu sends one reply at a time to Google Docs or Gmail, not a whole conversation to Markdown. Copy the conversation by hand for a one-off, or add a small tool that downloads the open Gemini conversation as a .md file.
Why export from Gemini
Gemini is often where research starts: a comparison of options, a summary of a long document, a plan for a trip or a project. If you keep notes in Markdown, in Obsidian, a Git repository or a plain folder, you'll want those conversations there too, with their structure intact. Gemini is tied closely to Google's own apps, so its export options point at Docs and Gmail rather than at a file you can keep anywhere.
The built-in way
Under each Gemini reply there's a Share and export button. As of October 2026, it offers options such as:
- Export to Docs, which creates a new Google Doc in your Drive containing that reply;
- Draft in Gmail, offered for some replies, which starts an email with the reply in it;
- a public share link for the conversation.
The options depend on the reply and on your account type. They all work on one reply at a time. Exporting a long conversation to Docs this way gives you one document per reply, without your prompts, and Docs isn't Markdown. You'd still need to download each doc and convert it.
There's also Google Takeout, which can include your Gemini activity in a full download of your Google data. Guides describe selecting My Activity and then only the Gemini apps entry. The result is an activity log in HTML or JSON, it depends on your activity settings, and people report incomplete or empty files. It's a backup route, not a way to save one conversation.
The manual way
For one conversation:
- Click the copy button under each Gemini reply. The copied text keeps much of its formatting.
- Paste each reply into a file in your editor.
- Select and copy each of your prompts, and paste it above the reply it produced.
- Add headings such as
## Meand## Geminito separate the parts. - Save the file with a
.mdextension.
It works, and it's slow for anything longer than a few turns. It's easy to miss a prompt, and tables sometimes come out as plain text that needs fixing.
Make it permanent with a tool
A button that does the copying for you is a small userscript: a few lines of JavaScript that run on gemini.google.com. It reads the conversation from the page, keeps your prompts and Gemini's replies in order, converts headings, lists, tables and code to Markdown, and downloads the result as one .md file.
ScriptPanda is a Chrome extension that builds userscripts like this from a plain-English request. Open its side panel on a Gemini conversation, paste the request at the end of this guide, and it writes the tool and installs it on the page. The button then shows up on every Gemini conversation you open, and you can ask ScriptPanda to change it later, for example to name files after the conversation title or add a date header.
Exporting doesn't use AI, so clicking the button doesn't use any of your plan's requests. Only building and changing the tool do.
If you use more than one assistant
Many people use Gemini alongside ChatGPT or Claude. The related guides build the same kind of button for those sites. Ask for the same section headings in each request and your exported conversations will all share one format, which makes them easier to search and compare later.
Which option to pick
- One good reply, into a Google Doc: use Share and export, then Export to Docs.
- A full archive: Google Takeout, accepting its quirks.
- Whole conversations as Markdown files, often: add the button.
Limits
The tool exports the conversation open in the current tab, from what Gemini has rendered on the page. It can't export conversations you haven't opened, and it can't run in the background or on a schedule. Images and uploaded files come out as references rather than files, and generated images aren't downloaded. If Google changes Gemini's layout and the button stops finding messages, open ScriptPanda on the page, say what broke, and ask it to fix the tool for the current page. The file is saved to your computer as a normal download, and the export itself sends nothing anywhere.
Do it with ScriptPanda
Build it in one request
Add an Export to Markdown button to this Gemini conversation that downloads the whole conversation as a .md file, with my prompts and Gemini's replies as separate sections.
- 1Add ScriptPanda to Chrome.
- 2Open the side panel on the site you want to change.
- 3Paste the request and send it. ScriptPanda builds the tool into the page.
