How to export a Claude conversation to Markdown
18 October 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer
Claude's built-in export downloads your whole account's data, not a single conversation as Markdown. For one chat, copy each reply with its copy button, or add a small tool that downloads the open conversation as a .md file with one click.
Why export a Claude conversation
Long Claude conversations tend to hold real work: a design you argued through, code you refined over many turns, notes for a piece of writing. Keeping that work in Markdown means you can drop it into Obsidian, a Git repository, a wiki or a plain folder of notes, with headings, lists and code blocks intact. Claude's interface is built for chatting, not for filing, so getting one conversation out cleanly takes a little effort.
The built-in way
Claude has an account-wide export. As of October 2026, on the web app or Claude Desktop:
- Click your initials in the lower-left corner and open Settings.
- Go to Privacy.
- Click Export data.
When the export is ready, Claude emails a download link to the address on your account. You need to be signed in to use the link, and it expires 24 hours after it arrives. If it lapses, you can request a new export. The export isn't available from the iOS or Android apps, and on Team and Enterprise plans only the organization's owner can run it.
The export is a full copy of your account data, including every conversation, in a machine-readable format. That makes it a good backup and a poor way to save one chat. You'd have to find the conversation in the files and convert it to Markdown yourself.
The manual way
For a single conversation:
- Under each of Claude's replies, click the copy button. The copied text keeps its Markdown formatting, including code blocks.
- Paste the replies into a new file in your editor.
- Copy your own messages by selecting them, and paste each one above the reply it prompted.
- Add a heading before each part, such as
## Meand## Claude, so the file is easy to scan. - Save the file as
.md.
This produces a clean file but scales badly. A conversation with dozens of turns takes a long time, and artifacts, the side panel Claude uses for longer documents and code, need copying separately. Selecting the whole page and pasting is quicker but brings the interface text with it and loses the formatting.
Make it permanent with a tool
When you save conversations regularly, it's worth having a button do the copying. A userscript is a short piece of JavaScript that runs on a website you choose. One that adds Export to Markdown to claude.ai reads the messages on the page in order, marks each as yours or Claude's, converts the formatting to Markdown and downloads a .md file named after the conversation.
ScriptPanda is a Chrome extension that writes userscripts like this from a plain description. Open its side panel on a Claude conversation, paste the request at the end of this guide, and it builds and installs the button on the page. From then on the button appears on every Claude conversation you open.
Useful extras you can ask for, in the first request or later:
- the conversation's title as the file name;
- a YAML header with the date and the conversation's link, for Obsidian;
- artifacts included as their own sections, when they're shown on the page.
Exporting doesn't call AI, so clicking the button never uses your plan's requests. Building the tool and changing it later do.
Which option to pick
- A backup of everything: use Export data under Settings, Privacy.
- One short conversation: copy it by hand.
- Any conversation, whenever you want, as Markdown: add the button.
If you use ChatGPT or Gemini as well, the related guides build the same button for those sites, so all your exports come out in the same shape.
Limits
The button exports the conversation open in the current tab, as Claude has rendered it on the page. It can't fetch conversations you haven't opened, and it doesn't run in the background or on a schedule. Uploaded files and images come out as references, not files. Artifacts are included only if they're visible in the page. If Claude's interface changes and the button stops finding messages, open ScriptPanda on the page, say what broke, and ask it to fix the tool. The file is saved to your computer as an ordinary download, and nothing is sent anywhere when you export.
Do it with ScriptPanda
Build it in one request
Add an Export to Markdown button at the top of this Claude conversation. When I click it, download the whole conversation as a .md file, with my messages and Claude's replies as separate sections, keeping code blocks and lists.
- 1Add ScriptPanda to Chrome.
- 2Open the side panel on the site you want to change.
- 3Paste the request and send it. ScriptPanda builds the tool into the page.
