How to save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF

Quick answer
Use Chrome's print dialog and choose Save as PDF as the destination. The catch is that the page prints with ChatGPT's sidebar, message box and buttons around the conversation. A small tool that opens a clean print view of just the messages fixes that.
Why a PDF
A PDF is the format you can send to anyone. A client, a teacher or a colleague can open it without an account, it looks the same on every device, and it can be attached to an email or filed with a project. When a ChatGPT conversation is the record of a decision, a piece of research or a plan, a PDF is often the most practical way to keep it.
The built-in way
Chrome can turn any page into a PDF:
- Open the conversation in ChatGPT.
- Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), or open the Chrome menu and choose Print.
- Under Destination, choose Save as PDF.
- Click Save and pick where to keep the file.
That's the whole procedure, and for a short conversation it may be good enough. The result usually has three problems, though.
First, the page prints what's on screen. The sidebar with your chat history, the message box at the bottom and the buttons under each reply can all end up in the PDF, taking space on every page. Second, long conversations are a scrolling layout built for a screen, not for paper. Page breaks fall in the middle of code blocks and tables, and some layouts cut text off at the edge. Third, depending on how the page loads long chats, messages far above the part you're looking at may not print in full.
Under More settings you can turn off Headers and footers, switch Background graphics on or off, and change the scale. These help a little. They don't remove the sidebar.
The manual way
You can get a cleaner PDF by moving the text somewhere built for printing:
- Copy each reply with the copy button under it, and your messages by selecting them.
- Paste everything into a document in Google Docs or Word, with a heading before each message.
- Fix the code blocks, which usually lose their monospace font on the way.
- Export the document as a PDF.
This gives a tidy result and takes the longest. It also breaks the link between the PDF and the conversation, so if the conversation continues you redo the whole thing.
Make it permanent with a tool
The quicker fix is a print view: a version of the page that contains only the conversation, laid out for paper. A userscript can build it. A userscript is a small piece of JavaScript that runs on a site you choose. One that adds a Save as PDF button to ChatGPT would gather the messages from the page, open them in a clean view with your messages and ChatGPT's replies clearly labelled, set sensible page breaks so code blocks aren't split, and then open Chrome's print dialog with that view, ready for Save as PDF.
ScriptPanda is a Chrome extension that writes tools like this from a description. You open its side panel on the conversation, paste the request at the end of this guide, and it builds the button into ChatGPT. After that, the button appears on every conversation you open. Printing doesn't call AI, so using the button doesn't use your plan's requests. Building it and changing it do.
You can shape the print view with follow-up requests, for example:
- Put the conversation title and today's date at the top of the first page.
- Use a larger font, or a narrower page margin.
- Leave out the regenerate buttons and any "thinking" sections.
Markdown or PDF?
PDF is for reading and sending. If you want to keep the conversation in a notes app, edit it, or search it later, Markdown is the better format. The related guide on exporting ChatGPT conversations to Markdown covers that. Many people keep both buttons.
Limits
The tool works on the conversation open in the current tab, and you still click Save in Chrome's print dialog yourself. It can't save conversations in bulk or on a schedule. Images in the conversation print only if they're shown on the page, and files ChatGPT generated aren't included, only references to them. If ChatGPT changes its layout, the print view can come out empty or incomplete. Open ScriptPanda on the page, describe what's wrong, and ask it to fix the tool. The PDF is created by Chrome on your computer, and nothing is uploaded when you use the button.
Do it with ScriptPanda
Build it in one request
Add a Save as PDF button to this ChatGPT conversation that opens a clean print view of the whole conversation, without the sidebar or the message box, so I can save it as a PDF.
- 1Add ScriptPanda to Chrome.
- 2Open the side panel on the site you want to change.
- 3Paste the request and send it. ScriptPanda builds the tool into the page.
